Light luxury laptops have been around for a while (think: Sony Vaio and Toshiba Portege ultraportables) but the age of head-turning ultra-thin designs dawned with the 13-inch light-and-wide MacBook Air, HP Voodoo Envy 133, and the ThinkPad X300.

Now the Dell Adamo joins the stable of conspicuously-consumed luxury laptops. The Adamo soars along with Apple's Air in the rarefied pricing altitudes of $1,799 to $2,699.

At the other extreme are Asus and Acer, practical working-class designs which offer portability for a lot less. Though both companies offer expensive laptops too, they have gained prominence with their inexpensive Netbooks: the Eee PC and Aspire One, respectively. These typically fall into the sub-$500 range.

Dell's entry into the luxury laptop market was replete with all the trappings of a high-end product rollout, including a lavish, overdone Adamo Web site (as in, I couldn't click on "skip intro" fast enough) of beautiful people clutching computers. (And viewing the site, this question comes to mind: Is the Adamo meant more as a Dell showcase item--like a piece of fine ware set in a vitrine, to be admired but not purchased?)

Juxtapose this with what's happening in the Netbook space: inconspicuous but slow-but-steady creep into a higher performance bracket. This trend is being driven by better Intel graphics (the GN40 is now capable of 720p HD video), with some Netbook designers entertaining the idea of adding even higher-performance Nvidia graphics. Reports also claim the Atom processor will be ratcheted up to 2.0GHz.

Will one design philosophy eventually prevail? Gravitating to a sweet-spot somewhere in the middle?

My take: The Apple MBA and Dell Adamo are compelling designs with larger screens, faster processors, better graphics, and more advanced storage options than Asus and Acer Netbooks.

But they don't best the Netbooks in some important respects: First and foremost, portability--Netbooks win here; wireless options are essentially identical; battery life is a toss-up; higher-capacity storage is available on Netbooks; and running everyday applications is not necessarily that much faster on luxury laptops.

XP uses the C:\Program Files directory as the default base directory into which new programs are installed. However, you can change the default installation drive and/ or directory by using a Registry hack.

Run the Registry Editor (regedit)and go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

Look for the value named ProgramFilesDir. by default,this value will be C:\Program Files. Edit the value to any valid drive or folder and XP will use that new location as the default installation directory for new programs.

This common interface is DirectX, something which can be the source of much confusion.

DirectX is an interface designed to make certain programming tasks much easier, for both the game developer and the rest of us who just want to sit down and play the latest blockbuster. Before we can explain what DirectX is and how it works though, we need a little history lesson.

Imagine how incredibly complex this was for programmers developing on the early pre-Windows PC architecture, then. Each programmer needed to develop their own way of reading the keyboard or detecting whether a joystick was even attached, let alone being used to play the game. Specific routines were needed even to display the simplest of images on the screen or play a simple sound.

Essentially, the game programmers were talking directly to your PC’s hardware at a fundamental level. When Microsoft introduced Windows, it was imperative for the stability and success of the PC platform that things were made easier for both the developer and the player. After all, who would bother writing games for a machine when they had to reinvent the wheel every time they began work on a new game? Microsoft’s idea was simple: stop programmers talking directly to the hardware, and build a common toolkit which they could use instead. DirectX was born.

How it works
At the most basic level, DirectX is an interface between the hardware in your PC and Windows itself, part of the Windows API or Application Programming Interface. Let’s look at a practical example. When a game developer wants to play a sound file, it’s simply a case of using the correct library function. When the game runs, this calls the DirectX API, which in turn plays the sound file. The developer doesn’t need to know what type of sound card he’s dealing with, what it’s capable of, or how to talk to it. In the example before, we discussed traffic in terms of downloading an MP3 file. However, each time you visit a web site, you are creating traffic, because in order to view that web page on your computer, the web page is first downloaded to your computer (between the web site and you) which is then displayed using your browser software (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) . The page itself is simply a file that creates traffic just like the MP3 file in the example above (however, a web page is usually much smaller than a music file).

A web page may be very small or large depending upon the amount of text and the number and quality of images integrated within the web page. How Much Bandwidth Is Enough?

It depends (don't you hate that answer). But in truth, it does. Since bandwidth is a significant determinant of hosting plan prices, you should take time to determine just how much is right for you. Almost all hosting plans have bandwidth requirements measured in months, so you need to estimate the amount of bandwidth that will be required by your site on a monthly basis

Average Page Views - On average, the number of web pages you expect a person to view. If you have 50 web pages in your web site, an average person may only view 5 of those pages each time they visit.

Average Page Size - The average size of your web pages, in Kilobytes (KB). If you have already designed your site, you can calculate this directly.
Average Daily File Downloads - The number of downloads you expect to occur on your site. This is a function of the numbers of visitors and how many times a visitor downloads a file, on average, each day.

Most hosting companies offer a variety of bandwidth options in their plans. So exactly what is bandwidth as it relates to web hosting? Put simply, bandwidth is the amount of traffic that is allowed to occur between your web site and the rest of the internet. The amount of bandwidth a hosting company can provide is determined by their network connections, both internal to their data center and external to the public internet.

Network Connectivity

The internet, in the most simplest of terms, is a group of millions of computers connected by networks. These connections within the internet can be large or small depending upon the cabling and equipment that is used at a particular internet location. It is the size of each network connection that determines how much bandwidth is available. For example, if you use a DSL connection to connect to the internet, you have 1.54 Mega bits (Mb) of bandwidth. Bandwidth therefore is measured in bits (a single 0 or 1). Bits are grouped in bytes which form words, text, and other information that is transferred between your computer and the internet.

If you have a DSL connection to the internet, you have dedicated bandwidth between your computer and your internet provider. But your internet provider may have thousands of DSL connections to their location. All of these connection aggregate at your internet provider who then has their own dedicated connection to the internet (or multiple connections) which is much larger than your single connection. They must have enough bandwidth to serve your computing needs as well as all of their other customers. So while you have a 1.54Mb connection to your internet provider, your internet provider may have a 255Mb connection to the internet so it can accommodate your needs and up to 166 other users (255/1.54).

Traffic

A very simple analogy to use to understand bandwidth and traffic is to think of highways and cars. Bandwidth is the number of lanes on the highway and traffic is the number of cars on the highway. If you are the only car on a highway, you can travel very quickly. If you are stuck in the middle of rush hour, you may travel very slowly since all of the lanes are being used up.

Traffic is simply the number of bits that are transferred on network connections. It is easiest to understand traffic using examples. One Gigabyte is 2 to the 30th power (1,073,741,824) bytes. One gigabyte is equal to 1,024 megabytes. To put this in perspective, it takes one byte to store one character. Imagine 100 file cabinets in a building, each of these cabinets holds 1000 folders. Each folder has 100 papers. Each paper contains 100 characters - A GB is all the characters in the building. An MP3 song is about 4MB, the same song in wav format is about 40MB, a full length movie can be 800MB to 1000MB (1000MB = 1GB).

If you were to transfer this MP3 song from a web site to your computer, you would create 4MB of traffic between the web site you are downloading from and your computer. Depending upon the network connection between the web site and the internet, the transfer may occur very quickly, or it could take time if other people are also downloading files at the same time. If, for example, the web site you download from has a 10MB connection to the internet, and you are the only person accessing that web site to download your MP3, your 4MB file will be the only traffic on that web site. However, if three people are all downloading that same MP at the same time, 12MB (3 x 4MB) of traffic has been created. Because in this example, the host only has 10MB of bandwidth, someone will have to wait. The network equipment at the hosting company will cycle through each person downloading the file and transfer a small portion at a time so each person's file transfer can take place, but the transfer for everyone downloading the file will be slower. If 100 people all came to the site and downloaded the MP3 at the same time, the transfers would be extremely slow. 5. Select Create a DOS Start Up Disk, click Using System Located At DOS.

7. Double click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"

8. Right click on "Primary IDE Channel" and select "Properties".

9. Select the "Advanced Settings" tab then on the device or 1 that doesn't have 'device type' greyed out select 'none' instead of 'autodetect' & click "OK".

10. Right click on "Secondary IDE channel", select "Properties" and repeat step 9.

11. Reboot your computer.

After all the steps above, your computer will be faster at boot. Results may be different on each computer, depending on the configuration of hardware and software that is installed in the computer. Try to be more optimal to disable some of the applications that run when the autorun.

3DMark06 World Record with AMD Phenom II X4

It appears that the launch of AMD's latest 45nm Phenom II processors has once again sparked the interest of all those overclocking enthusiasts that would go on pushing the limits of some of the latest hardware components on the market. We have already seen how the new chips have been used in some overclocking demonstrations in extreme cooling techniques. The said processors were benchmarked using some of the most popular applications on the market, namely Futuremark's 3DMark06 or the 05 edition. The setup allowed the overclocking team to break the world record, which was then lost to a score achieved by an Intel Core i7-based system.

However, Team Finland, known for its successful attempts at breaking the world record in 3DMark's benchmark applications, appears to always be on the look-out for better ways in order to set new standards. Regarding one of AMD's Deneb-based Phenom processors, a user pointed out that Team Finland had managed to break the 3DMark06 world record, using an extreme liquid nitrogen cooling solution installed on an overclocked Phenom II X4 processor. The team scored 35698 3DMarks, which landed them in the top spot in Futermark's 3DMark06 best scores.

The system configuration includes an ASUS M4A79T Deluxe motherboard, built on an AMD 790FX chipset, 2GB of Corsair's XMS3-2133 DDR3 memory, two ATI Radeon 4870 X2 graphics processors, a Thermaltake Toughpower 1200W, Tagan BZ 1300W power supplies and a Phenom II X4 processor, clocked at 6187MHz. The guys used a standard heatsink and fan cooling solution for the graphic cards, while the processor itself was cooled down by a Dragon F1 Extreme Edition Full Copper LN2 cooling system.

Now, while such attempts are mostly meant to demonstrate the overclocking potential of AMD's Phenom II processors, it is interesting to see that, for the first time in a while, AMD has managed to bring out a product that can seriously compete with Intel's products in the high-end market segment. As with the Radeon HD 4800-series graphics cards, the new Phenom II processors will likely help the chip maker gain more market share, given the overall price/performance ratio, delivered by the aforementioned CPUs.

Lucidlogix Hydra Details

Last night we had an interesting chat with Nir Cohen who is the senior product marketing manager at Lucidlogix, as he was vistiing Taipei to talk to some potential customers and he gave us a few more details about the Hydra chip and what it can do.

Although he wouldn't go into too much detail, we did find out some new and interesting aspects on what Hydra can do. First of all, the implementation done by ELSA Japan is not the same setup as that which will be found on consumer motherboards, as the Hydra chip can function in two different modes. To make a replacement for SLI or CrossFireX, the Hydra chip has to be configured to run in graphics performance mode, but ELSA's implementation doesn't generally work in this mode, as ELSA is using the chip as a PCI Express controller for use with Nvidia Tesla cards for GPGPU applications.

The Hydra chips have a built in RISC processor which is the key part in the graphics performance mode and this makes it a much more flexible solution than your average PCI Express controller. ELSA's implementation is said to be cheaper than using a Tesla server with four cards from Nvidia, but we'll have to wait and see what ELSA's official pricing will be until we know this for sure. In non graphics performance mode up to four cards can be used, but in graphics performance mode you're limited to two cards at the moment, but Lucidlogix is working on allowing for up to four cards.

We also found out that the interface on the ELSA solution that connects to a workstation or server is using an external PCI Express x16 connection, although as this is only used for transferring data to be computed and already computed data between the CPU and the Tesla cards, this is meant to be more than enough for the intended usage scenarios. We're not sure how this works with other solutions, such as using Quadro cards.

Another interesting aspect is that its possible to cascade multiple Hydra chips, although at the moment this is limited to two chips, but this would allow for more cards to be used. This could at least in theory allow for four GPU graphics cards, but Nir suggested that in the future up to 8 GPU's per Hydra chip could be possible, in theory at least.

For those that are worried that this will be another nForce 200 chip, there's no need to worry as Nir assured us that the Hydra has a TDP of a mere 4W and as such it shouldn't even need a heatsink, although we expect motherboard makers to add one just in case.

The reason why Hydra scales so well is because its the Hydra chip that controls the rendering and Lucidlogix is doing it quite different than the way AMD and Nvidia are doing things. Using multiple graphics cards have so far meant alternate frame rendering, split screen rendering or tile based rendering. Lucidlogix on the other hand is going for object based rendering which is an entirely new approach which means that each GPU get allocated parts of an object of the scene that's being rendered and then the Hydra chip pieces together the small parts into the final frame which is then displayed on the screen.

The proof is still in the pudding so to say, as Lucidlogix has yet to show a running demo of its Hydra chip, but with a bit of luck this should happen during CeBIT which kicks off early next month. So far we're only hearing whispers about potential consumer partners, but again, there's a chance that more details will be revealed during CeBIT.
